A Class Licence covers low-risk, widely available devices like Wi-Fi routers or Bluetooth accessories and requires no individual registration. An Individual Licence is required for devices using specific frequency bands or those with higher interference potential, such as private radio networks.

ICASA requires Type Approval to ensure all electronic and radio devices meet minimum technical standards and do not interfere with South Africa’s national frequency spectrum. Labels confirm the device has been tested and approved. Operating unapproved equipment can result in fines, seizure of goods, or loss of license.

Individual Licences follow a more complex process than Type Approvals. Applications can only be submitted when ICASA issues an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Once submitted, the approval process can take up to 10 months and is subject to final ICASA Council approval.
